some thoughts

I've shared bits about my life on this blog, but right now I'm going to be brave and lay out there a piece of my heart.

Gentle. Optimistic. Faithful. Witty. These are all qualities that come to mind when I think of President Gordon B. Hinckley, the head of the Mormon church whose funeral I watched on TV this morning. He was an extraordinary man, but his legacy doesn't stop at that. He was a prophet of God.

A friend of mine once asked me why, with the world as crazy as it is, would I trust in a man to be God's messenger. Isn't that what has wreaked so much terror and havoc throughout history--men wielding power in the name of God?

My only answer to that question is that I don't trust in men; I trust in God. I communicate with Him through prayer, and in answer to my prayers I have felt very deeply and certainly that the men I call prophets are in fact God's messengers of peace and truth to the mixed-up world we live in.

President Hinckley as prophet said:

"This is a time to be strong.

"It is a time to do what is right regardless of the consequences that might follow.

"It is a time to be found keeping the commandments.

"It is a season to reach out with kindness and love to those in distress and to those who are wandering in darkness and pain.

"It is a time to be considerate and good, decent and courteous toward one another in all our relationships. In other words, to become more Christlike."
Gordon B. Hinckley, “This Is the Work of the Master,” Ensign, May 1995, 69

Jesus Christ set the only perfect example, and I know that He leads The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. But I am thankful that God still calls prophets now to continue to show us the way to Him and happiness.

I love President Hinckley and feel so lucky to have lived during his administration in this church. I will try to "stand a little taller" as he always encouraged us to do.
